Indiana Wine Grape Council to hold spring workshop

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Wine Grape Task Force along with the Indiana Wine Grape Council will sponsor a spring workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 20 at Chateau Thomas Winery in Plainfield.

"The workshop will emphasize wine quality," said Bruce Bordelon, a Purdue professor of viticulture. "We will also go over the influence of oak on wine taste and quality."

Bordelon said the workshop also will cover lab proficiency and sorbate management. Additionally, the topic of creating a quality alliance for Indiana will be discussed.

"This will be a continuation of previous discussions on this topic of developing an 'Indiana Quality' or 'IQ' designations for our wines," he said.

Several states have their own quality alliance in which an independent panel evaluates wines and approves them for the IQ designations. The designation means all the criteria of a premium wine have been met, Bordelon said.

"This helps build our industry's reputation for quality wines," he said.

The workshop will cover other topics, including winemaking, grape growing, quality, analysis and marketing. Speakers for the event include Bordelon, professor of enology Christian Butzke, enology specialist Ellie Butz, enology assistant Jill Blume and marketing specialist Jeanette Merrit.

The workshop registration fee is $30 for Indiana Winegrowers Guild members and $50 for non-members. More information is available online.
