Poster symposium highlights Purdue's undergraduate research

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Undergraduate students at Purdue University will have a chance to show off their research projects at a poster symposium next month.

The Undergraduate Research and Poster Symposium on April 11 will feature more than 100 posters highlighting progress and results of research in science, agriculture, technology, education, engineering, and child development and family studies. The projects will be displayed in Purdue Memorial Union's South Ballroom, and it is free and open to the public.

"The symposium is unique and educational, but it's also a fun opportunity to highlight students and recognize their research," said Mary Schultz, coordinator for the poster event.

Not only is the poster symposium beneficial to participants, but it also is valuable to prospective high school students.

"It gives high school students an excellent chance to see the realm of research that one can engage in as an undergraduate student," said Jane Alexander, assistant director for academic excellence in the College of Agriculture.

A panel of judges, consisting of faculty and students selected from the various colleges, will score the posters according to how well research methods were executed and understood, the value of the research, the poster's appearance and the student's overall enthusiasm about the research conducted.

Poster presentations will be available for viewing starting at 2:30 p.m. followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 7 p.m. First and second place winners will be recognized with awards consisting of cash prizes and plaques. Special awards include the dean's award and the student's award.

Purdue's College of Agriculture, College of Science and the Science Council are sponsoring the symposium.
