Purdue's Boiler Battalion to conduct spring field training exercise

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A group of Purdue's Army ROTC cadets will conduct its own spring training this week at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh.

From Friday (March 31) to Sunday (April 2), more than 90 Army ROTC cadets will move into a field environment, or bivouac, with other cadets from a number of other of universities, including Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Ball State University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Butler University, Wabash College and Xavier University.

"Once we reach Camp Atterbury, we will combine the cadets from all the schools into composite units," said Lt. Col. Dan Carpenter, head of the Army ROTC department and professor of military science and leadership. "By doing this, the cadets will gain experience working with unfamiliar people under stressful situations and in an austere environment."

Training will consist of land navigation during day and night, a confidence course, outdoor living, road marching, helicopter training flights and operations, and leadership exercises such as computer simulations, paintball matches and obstacle courses.
