Purdue workshop offers tips on country living

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Cooperative Extension service in Johnson County and the Franklin High School FFA will offer an educational program for families about country living.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 15 at Creekside Elementary School in Franklin.

"There has been a shift from highly urbanized areas around Indy to people moving to more rural areas," said Kimberly Moore, Extension educator. "They need to understand septic systems, how to deal with the traffic, which includes farm machinery, and the difference in going from a small yard to having a large yard to care for," Moore said.

The adult program covers topics including proper septic system and well maintenance, home gardening and landscaping, the country as a learning tool for children and managing wildlife. It will also give participants a chance to talk to local farmers. Guest speakers will be Fred Whitford, pesticide specialist, and Judy Loven, wildlife specialist, both of Purdue Extension.

The program also offers topics for youth in third to eighth grade, including safety in the kitchen and with animals, ponds, poisons, lawnmowers and bicycles. There will also be a wildlife and farm animal identification activity.

Preregistration, which is due by Friday (April 7), is $10 per adult and $5 per child and includes lunch. There is also a family rate for those from the same address for $25. Late registration is $10 more for individuals and $20 more for the family rate. Participants may register by calling (317) 736-3724.
