Purdue Black Caucus to honor student achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — More than 160 African American undergraduate students will be honored for academic achievements and leadership accomplishments by the Purdue Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff at the 31st annual awards program Saturday (April 8).

This year's program will begin at 11 a.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. Provost Sally Mason will be a featured speaker, and the keynote address will be given by Kofi A. Kondwani, psychologist in the department of community health and preventive medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine. Kondwani directs a course on complementary and alternative medicine and directs the meditation clinic in the department of family medicine.

"The Black Caucus Awards Program is the only awards program sponsored directly by faculty and staff for students across all departments on the campus," said David Rollock, chair of the Black Caucus Awards Program publicity subcommittee and professor of psychological sciences.

Students who meet grade-point criteria will receive certificates and gifts. One student from nursing or health sciences will receive the "Clara Bell Award," named for a professor emerita and former director of continuing education in nursing. Bell was an active member of the Purdue University Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff.

This year, the group will honor a "Parent of the Year" and a "Department/Unit of the Year."
