Faculty, staff honored at Purdue Honors Convocation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue faculty and staff will receive several special honors today (Sunday, April 9) during the university's Honors Convocation in Elliott Hall of Music.

Each of Purdue's academic areas will present an award for excellence in teaching, and there will be five additional honors for special academic endeavors. Award winners were:

• Kim L. Wilson, assistant professor of horticulture and landscape architecture, College of Agriculture Richard L. Kohls Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.

• Olivia B. Wood, associate professor of food and nutrition, Mary L. Matthews Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences.

• Timothy J. Newby, professor of educational technology, College of Education Outstanding Teacher Award.

• William C. Oakes, associate professor of engineering education and co-director of EPICS, A.A. Potter Best of Engineering Teaching Award.

• Robert D. Stewart, assistant professor of radiological health, School of Health Science Robert R. Landolt Award for Excellence in Teaching.

• Rosalee A. Clawson, associate professor of political science, College of Liberal Arts Excellence in Education Award.

• James L. Oakley, assistant professor of management, School of Management Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award.

• Diane S. Campbell, clinical assistant professor of nursing, School of Nursing’s LaNelle E. Geddes Excellence in Teaching Award.

• Stanley L. Hem, professor of industrial and physical pharmacy practice, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Henry W. Heine Award for Excellence in Teaching.

• Jeffrey A. Beckley, continuing lecturer for mathematics/statistics, College of Science Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.

• Frederick B. Muehlhausen, associate professor of building construction management, College of Technology James G. Dwyer Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching.

• John A. Christian, associate professor of veterinary medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award.

• Supriyo Datta, the Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Herbert Newby McCoy Award. The award, which consists of $4,000 for Datta and an additional $7,000 toward his research, has been given annually since 1964 to a student or faculty member at Purdue for their contributions to science. Datta is being honored for his scientific contributions to the theory of quantum transport in nonoscale electronic devices and molecular electronics.

• Anil Bajaj, professor of mechanical engineering, and David Nichols, professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology, Provost's Award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentors. Both will receive certificates and a $2,500 cash prize.

• Sarah Johnson, director of dining services for University Residences, Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award. The award, which consists of a medallion and $1,500, honors significant contributions by a staff or faculty member to the education and well-being of women students at Purdue.

• Mary Godwin, graduate assistant in English, theory and cultural studies, Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award. The award includes a $4,000 cash prize and a $2,000 academic expense account to the department.

• Jennifer Richardson, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, Award for Excellence in Distance Learning, Best Credit-Granting Program. The award recognized her course titled "EDCI 564 — Integration and Management of Computers in Education." The award included $1,000.

The awards for Excellence in Distance Learning recognize professional accomplishment and innovative approaches to "teaching at a distance." They spotlight initiatives in distance learning that are under way throughout the Purdue system.
