Davis-Purdue Agricultural Center to hold field dayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.The Davis-Purdue University Agriculture Center will be the location for a forest-wildlife and timber-management field day next month. The field day, which will be held 9 a.m. to noon on June 3, will feature forest-management topics, including exotic insects, timber management and wildlife-conducive habitats, as well as tours of forest sites for hands-on observation and demonstrations. The field day, which will take place at the Davis-Purdue Agriculture Center six miles north of Farmland, Ind., in eastern Indiana, is free to the public and refreshments will be provided. Landowners and property managers are encouraged to attend. To start the day, Jodi Ellis, Purdue exotic insects education coordinator, will speak about exotic insects with a focus on the emerald ash borer and the gypsy moth. She will discuss the background information on these insects as well as what will most likely happen with these insects in the future and how it will affect timber-management and forest-wildlife management. "We hope that people realize that in dealing with exotic insects, not all is lost people have options," said Don Carlson, woodlands forester for Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources. "Part of our goal is just to show them those options." Carlson and Kent Hanauer, Indiana Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist, will discuss effective reforestation; deer impacts; forest-wildlife management; and managing forests when impacted by overmaturity, storm and ice damage, and past timber harvesting. The Davis-Purdue Agriculture Center has existed since 1917. The center consists of 460 tillable acres and 111 acres of forests. In 1975, a 51-acre woodlot containing some mature timber was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
