Purdue NotebookMay 25, 2006 Appointments and promotions Tomalee K. Dean has been hired as head of the Management and Economics Library. She has served for the past 11 years at the Kresge Business Library at the University of Michigan including the past five years as library director. Max Jones, who took a sabbatical to work with the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band in fall 2005, has been named to the position of assistant professor of bands replacing retiring professor Bill Kisinger. He will serve as assistant director of the marching band, and director of the Collegiate Band and Boiler Brass men's basketball band. J. Paul Robinson, a professor of cytomics in the School of Veterinary Medicine and a professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, has been named president of the International Society for Analytical Cytology. The two-year post was announced during the organization's 23rd International Congress May 20-24 in Quebec City, Canada.
Campus activities A number of student activities and organizations won awards during the annual Student Activities and awards luncheon. The Co-Sponsorship of the Year Award was given to the Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers for their networking night. The Outstanding Program Award was given to Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority for its Big Man on Campus event, which raised more than $51,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The community Engagement and Involvement Award is given to an organization that provides service to other people or a place. The Purdue University Dance Marathon won for its event that involved students, community members, families and children from Riley Children's Hospital. The Purdue Cooperative Council received the Excellence Award, which is a lifetime achievement award for a group that demonstrates continuous programs, leadership and service. The council consists of members from all housing units and provides guidance for the Purdue cooperative housing community.
Faculty and staff honors Peixuan Guo, a Purdue professor of biomedical engineering and molecular virology and a researcher at the Purdue Cancer Center, has received a 2006 Lion's Club Award for his cancer research. Guo, director of the Purdue Bionanotechnology Graduate Program, was honored with the award on May 17. Ron Rardin, a Purdue professor of industrial engineering and director of the Purdue Energy Modeling Research Groups, received the National Outstanding Fellow award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. With more than 15,000 members, the institute is the world's largest professional society dedicated to the industrial engineering profession. As director of the energy modeling research, he serves on Indiana's energy planning group, and conducts research on clean coal, renewable energy and other energy issues. He is also director of academic operations for Purdue's Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, which is a campus-wide program to apply the principles of engineering, management and science to improve healthcare delivery. Rardin joined Purdue in 1982 and, while at Purdue, he has served as a program director for the National Science Foundation. He earned his bachelor's and master's degreed from the University of Kansas and his doctorate in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. James Barany, a Purdue professor of industrial engineering, received the National Outstanding Faculty Adviser award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. With more than 15,000 members, the institute is the world's largest professional society dedicated to the industrial engineering profession. Previously, Barany has served on the board of directors for the institute. Barany, who came to Purdue in 1958, has received a number of Purdue awards including the College of Engineering Award of Excellence for Advising, the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in the School of Industrial Engineering, the Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award and the Purdue University Book of Great Teachers. Barany earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and his master's and doctorate in industrial engineering from Purdue.
