Grupo Fantasma returns for Latino Cultural Center summer seriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Latino Cultural Center will welcome back Grupo Fantasma for a free outdoor concert later this month for the first of three summer events.
"Last year's concert brought together people from all over the Lafayette area, so we decided to get on Grupo Fantasma's 2006 summer tour circuit," said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center. "We hope people will return and bring others to enjoy their music and a nice evening out on the hill." The group plays Latin music with a modern edge. Based in Austin, Texas, Grupo Fantasma features Spanish-language vocals and a four-piece horn section anchored by a percussion and rhythm section. They were named best Latin contemporary band four times at the Austin Music Awards. Another summer program at the Latino Cultural Center is the Bilingual Book Club's La Polilla Café, which features a discussion of "Sweet Diamond Dust," written by Rosario Ferre. The book is a multi-generational tale of the De La Valle family and their Puerto Rican sugar mill through the eyes of several family members. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 24 at the Latino Cultural Center's new location, 600 N. Russell St. The center also is sponsoring a showing of "Frida," a biography of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, starring Salma Hayek, at 8 p.m. on July 21. The movie will be shown in the back yard of the Latino Cultural Center. In case of rain, call the Latino Cultural Center, (765) 494-2530 for alternate location.
