Nominations sought to honor Indiana women in Agriculture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nominations are now being accepted for the first Indiana Women in Agriculture award that will honor Hoosier women who have played an important role in agriculture.

"There are many women who have an interest or passion for agriculture but are afraid to take the plunge and dive in," said Stacy Herr, Purdue University cooperative Extension service educator for Wayne County and award coordinator. "Our goal is to inspire, give confidence and provide resources to women in agriculture."

The award, co-sponsored by Indiana AgriNews and Purdue Extension, will honor women who have excelled and played an important role in Indiana agriculture.

Purdue Extension has formed a state team, composed of field and campus staff, focusing on the needs of women in agriculture. The team coordinates the Midwest Women in Agriculture conference as well as additional educational programs for Hoosier women in agriculture.

Women involved in production agriculture, agribusiness and entrepreneurial agriculture enterprises are eligible. The nominee must reside in Indiana and be part of an agriculture enterprise or agribusiness that operates in Indiana.

Applications must be received by July 10 and e-mailed to sherr@purdue.edu with "WIA Ach Award App" as the subject line or mailed to Wayne County Administration Building, 401 E. Main St., Richmond, IN 47374.

The award recipient will be recognized Aug. 16 during Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair. The awards presentation begins at 10 a.m. in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion.
