Purdue president to emphasize importance of community service

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke on July 10 will discuss Purdue's commitment to enhance life in Indiana through community service and service-learning initiatives.

From 2-3 p.m. during WBAA Radio's live call-in show "AM 920 Magazine," Jischke will field questions from host Dan Skinner and the listening audience.

Jischke will highlight programs such as Engineering Projects in Community Service, in which teams of undergraduate students earn academic credit for multiyear, multidisciplinary projects that solve engineering- and technology-based problems for community service and education organizations. The program has been replicated at 17 universities throughout the nation and abroad.

Jischke said such programs can increase the pre-existing tendency of college graduates to lead or contribute to charitable activities.

"This country was built by people who performed volunteer work to make their communities better," Skinner said. "Today's students are the people who will carry on this tradition in the 21st century."

To ask questions, local listeners can call (765) 496-1999. Listeners outside the local calling area can call toll-free at (866) 922-2101. WBAA's AM signal reaches approximately two-thirds of Indiana and can be heard globally via the station's Web site. Jischke typically appears on the program the first Wednesday of each month. This month's appearance was rescheduled because of the Independence Day holiday.

Jischke discusses different topics on every show. Past interview topics have included the need to bolster the nation's science and engineering education, Purdue's academic ratings and the university's ongoing capital campaign. Previous interviews are archived on the station's Web site.
