Michigan State administrator to lead Purdue enrollment management, admissions

Pamela T. Horne
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A longtime administrator and student services official at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University has been selected as Purdue University's new assistant vice president for enrollment management and dean of admissions.

Pamela T. Horne has been assistant to the provost for enrollment management and director of admissions at Michigan State since 2002. She will begin her duties at Purdue Sept. 1, said Thomas B. Robinson, Purdue's vice president for student services.

Horne will replace Douglas L. Christiansen, who will become associate provost for enrollment and dean of admissions at Vanderbilt University. He has been at Purdue since 1995.

"Pam is one of the best enrollment management administrators in the country, and she has proven herself to be a strong leader, especially during her years at Michigan State," Robinson said. "Purdue is fortunate to have a very successful enrollment management program, and we are confident that our success will continue under Pam's direction."

In her new position, Horne will serve as the chief enrollment officer at Purdue and will oversee enrollment management for the West Lafayette campus and statewide technology sites.

She will be responsible for a wide range of areas, including admissions, financial aid, orientation, new student programs, learning communities, early-access programs, registrar, and enrollment management analysis and reporting.

"I have had wonderful careers at both MSU and the University of Michigan, helping both universities establish and accomplish a variety of goals," Horne said. "Purdue is a fantastic university, and I am eager to learn more about the community. I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to shape the future of this world-class university."

Enrollment management involves working with various areas across the university — including the colleges and schools, space management and academic scheduling, the bursar, graduate school admissions, international students and scholars, and university residences — to develop and continually reevaluate a comprehensive enrollment management strategy that is consistent with Purdue's goals, missions and resources.

Before coming to Michigan State, Horne held a variety of administrative positions at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor since 1984, including assistant director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, assistant associate provost, director of orientation and campus information, assistant director for student information services, and assistant director of student organizations and programs.

Horne also served as an academic adviser and program coordinator for the Office of Campus Life at Eastern Michigan University, was director of student activities at Mercy College of Detroit and was residence hall director and assistant to the dean of women at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

She earned a bachelor's degree in speech communication from the University of Kansas in 1974 and a master's degree in education, also from the University of Kansas, in 1982. In addition, she completed the management development program from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1994.

Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette has an enrollment of 38,712. Purdue also has a statewide system that includes five campuses and numerous teaching and research sites. Total enrollment for all campuses is 69,098 students.
