Orientation set for beginning and transfer adult, nontraditional students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A special orientation session for beginning and transfer adult, nontraditional students attending Purdue University will take place next week.

SPAN PLAN Adult Student Services Program, housed within the Office of the Dean of Students, is sponsoring the orientation, which will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 14) in Schleman Hall, Room 112.

"Adult students make up 4 percent of the population at Purdue University in West Lafayette, yet they often do not seek the help they need to balance their adult responsibilities and their studies," said Dorothy Hughes, a SPAN PLAN counselor. "SPAN PLAN is dedicated to helping all the adult, nontraditional students succeed, not just while they are students, but also after they graduate."

A panel of current adult students at Purdue will be on hand during the orientation to share their experiences and answer questions from incoming students. The panel also will offer coping strategies for busy, nontraditional students.

During the orientation, students will have a chance to tour campus, learn about important campus resources, and ask questions and share concerns.

Along with the orientation program, the SPAN PLAN offers adult, nontraditional students academic, career and personal counseling; grants and scholarships to qualified adult learners; and career and job search services.

Free parking will be available after 5 p.m. in the gravel lot in front of Schleman Hall of Student Services or in the Northwestern parking garage.
