Purdue to welcome back study abroad studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University on Wednesday (Aug. 23) will recognize the approximately 775 students who studied abroad in the spring and summer of this year with a reception. The event, which will include a welcome by Provost Sally Mason and faculty leaders, will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom. "These students, no matter where they have traveled to, share a common bond in that they are interested in travel and other cultures," said Brian Harley, director of the Office of Study Abroad. "The reception is a wonderful opportunity for returning students to see fellow program participants they haven't seen since they were abroad, as well as to make new friends and reconnect with staff members." There also will be a photo contest in which students submit pictures they have taken during their visits abroad. Final judging of the approximately 20 finalists in each category most cultural experience and most picturesque will be made by Bradley Dancer, a 1995 Purdue graduate who is the vice president of research at the National Geographic Channel. Irvine Travel will provide an air ticket voucher for the overall photo contest winner. There also will be a student choice award, which is determined by student votes. The finalists for this award are currently on display at Hookah, an international restaurant in the village area of West Lafayette.
