Search panel named to find candidates for next Purdue presidency

J. Timothy McGinley
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue officials today (Monday, Sept. 11) took the first step toward selecting the university's future leader by naming a committee to identify candidates to succeed President Martin C. Jischke.

J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of the Purdue Board of Trustees, announced that trustees John Hardin Jr. and Michael Birck will co-chair a 14-member committee that includes representatives from faculty, staff, students, alumni and the trustees.

John Hardin Jr.
Michael Birck
Hardin of Danville, Ind., is owner and manager of Hardin Farms and vice chairman of the board of trustees. Birck of Hinsdale, Ill., is founder of Tellabs Inc., based in Naperville, Ill. The search committee's charge will be to select and evaluate finalists, helping to identify a candidate to take the helm by June 30, when Jischke has said he plans to retire. The trustees also have hired R.W. Funk & Associates, an executive search firm, to assist the search committee in the selection process.

"We are extremely fortunate that the leadership of our present board is the same as that which brought Dr. Jischke to Purdue as its 10th president in August 2000," said Joseph L. Bennett, vice president for university relations. "Dr. Jischke today is acknowledged not only as a leader in higher education, but also as a person who has energized Purdue and the state of Indiana. I'm confident that the

wisdom and experience of this board will result in a successful search and continued outstanding leadership for Purdue."

McGinley is a principal and founder of House Investments, the largest commercial and residential real estate investment firm in Indiana. He has been a member of Purdue's board of trustees for 18 years, the last 14 as chairman.

"The trustees will meet with representatives across our campuses and throughout the state to determine the priorities our next president should pursue," McGinley said. "We will meet with the University Senate, the advisory committees for both administrative/professional and service/clerical staff. We will talk to our alumni and our students. We'll seek input from national and state education leaders, legislators and opinion leaders.

"We will look carefully at what we learn, and that will help us identify the directions in which the university should move."

McGinley added: "The last time we searched for a new president, we were a very good university. Today, we are much stronger, and Purdue should attract the very best candidates. We expect to continue to improve as we move toward preeminence. We know Indiana is counting on us. We know the stakes are very high."

The search committee includes three other trustees:

• Susan Bulkeley Butler of Tucson, retired executive with Accenture, author and founder of Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for the Development of Women Leaders.

• Mamon M. Powers Jr. of Gary, Ind., president of Powers Construction Co.

• William Oesterle of Indianapolis, CEO of Angie's List, a consumer-advocate service.

Purdue faculty, staff and student representatives on the committee are:

• Diane Denis, professor and senior associate dean of management.

• Thomas Farris, head of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

• Jonathan Foltz, Purdue Student Government president.

• Joseph Francisco, William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry.

• Charles Rutledge, vice president for research and former dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences.

• Bernard Tao, Purdue University Senate chair and the Indiana Soybean Board Professor in Soybean Utilization Research.

• Michael Wartell, chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

• Carolyn Perrucci, professor of sociology and anthropology.

Also named to the committee was Purdue alumnus Jerry Semler of Indianapolis, chairman of the board of American United Mutual Insurance Holding Co. and its subsidiary, OneAmerica Financial Partners Inc.
