College of Technology awards record amount in scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue's College of Technology awarded a record amount of scholarships — both in number and in dollar value — at a ceremony Sept. 18 at the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center.

One hundred seventy-four students received a total of $216,250 in scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year during the reception. An additional $64,750 was awarded to 48 students at the college's 10 statewide locations.

Amounts for individual students range from $500 to $10,000, with the average amount per student being about $1,000.

During the reception, Dean Dennis R. Depew acknowledged the college's progress and commitment to increasing the amount of scholarships, as well as strengthening donor support.

"At Purdue University, we believe that a college education should be an attainable goal for anyone wanting to expand their mind and secure a better quality of life ... and a scholarship is often the link between student ambition and student success," he said. "Through the generous assistance of our scholarship supporters, we have been able to make considerable progress in the development of scholarships for our students in recent years.

"This year’s scholarship fund is a 10 percent increase over last year and is supporting another 22 students in their academic pursuits."

Students received scholarships in all nine College of Technology majors: aviation technology, building construction management, computer and information technology, computer graphics technology, electrical and computer engineering technology, industrial technology, manufacturing engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership and supervision.

"The competition for these scholarships is intense, and the fact that we had a record-setting year demonstrates the kind of top-notch students we have in our programs," said Jacqueline Brown, academic excellence coordinator with the College of Technology.

Brown said another reason there was such a large amount of scholarships awarded is due to better communication with donors — both individual and corporate — that provide the funds for the gifts.

"We as a college have done a better job of getting the word out about our students and programs, which has resulted in greater donor and alumni support for these scholarships.

"Our ultimate goal is to help struggling students who otherwise may not have been able to attend college," she said. "We're proud of the fact that we are able to help more students than ever before achieve the dream of a college education, and we are eager to witness their contributions to both Purdue and their fields in years to come."
