Purdue to conduct follow-up to diversity survey

Alysa Christmas Rollock
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - On Oct. 16, Purdue University will begin a survey and assessment that will gauge perceptions of faculty, staff and students about the current campus climate for diversity and compare results to those from a 2002 assessment.

"We are approaching the end of the strategic plan period, so we want to evaluate where we are today and measure our progress," said Alysa Christmas Rollock, vice president for human relations. "We want all faculty, staff and students to participate in the survey so that we can get as accurate a picture as possible."

The survey, to be offered both online and via telephone, will be administered in three slightly different versions based on whether the respondent is a student or a member of faculty or staff. The survey will seek opinions on the overall climate for diversity, commitment to diversity, openness and respect on campus, and general acceptance of differences.

All faculty, staff and students will receive information from Rollock's office on how to participate in the survey.

The majority of participants are expected to take the survey online, Rollock said. Those who either cannot take the survey online or choose not to can answer questions by telephone..

The survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete either on the Internet or by phone. Those taking the online survey may leave and return to their saved questionnaire as often as they choose until they're finished.

Results of the survey will be reported on campus this spring.

Findings from the 2002 survey showed a moderately favorable 3.55 score on a 1-to-5 scale on "general diversity," with 5 being the most favorable, Rollock said.
