Consumer and family sciences educators honoredWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Indiana Extension Educator Association (IEEA) honored several Purdue University consumer and family sciences Extension educators on Tuesday (Oct. 17) during Purdue Extension's annual conference banquet.Judi Merkel of Wells County received the Innovator Award for her work in organizing the Kids Health and Safety Fair. Community volunteers, organizations and agencies collaborated to provide first-grade students with hands-on activities to reinforce healthy choices. The Junior Award went to April Uncapher from Starke County for her contribution to the Get Healthy program. The program, which was requested by Starke County Hospital, educated participants about the importance of a healthy diet and how to achieve it. Participants learned how to design a nutritional diet, taking into account food choices, serving sizes and how to alter recipes for better health. Dotty Keeton from Jefferson County was given the Senior Award for her development and implementation of the It's My Money You're Using program. Keeton designed the program to educate individuals from three counties about the legal and family aspects of handling others' money. The Career Award winner was Nancy Casada from Harrison County for her 25 years of service as an Extension educator. Casada has presented many financial management programs and has been involved in several leadership development projects. Casada's involvement in a number of organizations and coalitions, including Lifelong Learning Inc., Teen Health Task Force and Human Service Organization, has allowed her to serve a leadership role in Harrison County.
