Purdue Extension honors horticulturalist with Sharvelle award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service honored Elizabeth Maynard with the Eric G. Sharvelle Distinguished Extension Specialist Award. Maynard was honored Tuesday (Oct. 17) during Purdue Extension's annual conference banquet.

"She is a valuable member of our department and Purdue Extension," said Edward Ashworth, department head for horticulture and landscape architecture. "She uses a variety of methods to maintain a proactive outreach program to respond to the challenges facing the Indiana vegetable industry."

Maynard, a specialist in vegetable and greenhouse production, communicates with growers through newsletters, Web sites, twilight meetings and statewide conferences. She was instrumental in establishing the Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Connection Web site, which contains more than 1,000 pages of information covering nearly 40 fruit and vegetable crops. More than 100 presentations across the state at commercial vegetable and floriculture and Master Gardeners meetings have helped to spread information throughout the industry.

Maynard conducts research and demonstration trials on sweet corn, tomatoes and pumpkins in the northern part of the state and publishes the results for use by vegetable growers and Extension educators. She also serves as treasurer of the Indiana Horticulture Congress and secretary-treasurer of the Indiana Vegetable Growers Association and Northwest Indiana Floriculture Association.

She joined Purdue Extension in 1992 and was honored as the Senior Extension Specialist last year.

The Sharvelle Award is given each year in memory of Eric G. Sharvelle, a Purdue professor of botany and plant pathology from 1946-75. Derek and Sybil Sharvelle of Battle Ground, Ind., established the award in 1985.
