International forum to feature Costa Rican speakersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A forum coming to the Purdue University campus will focus on Costa Rican agriculture and trade opportunities for Indiana agribusinesses.The Costa Rica International Forum take place Oct. 23 from 1-3 p.m. in Krannert Auditorium, and there is no cost to attend. Featured speakers are Henry Quesada Pineda and Eliecer Varas. Pineda, a professor at the School of Industrial Engineering in Cartago, Costa Rica, is a wood manufacturing and natural resources specialist. Vargas, a professor at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, or CATIE, is an agricultural economist and an international consultant. "They will be here to discuss the state of Costa Rican agriculture, specific success stories of the country, issues in developing agriculture economies, and additional ways that Indiana agribusinesses can pair with Costa Rica for trade," said Lee Stanish, Purdue international youth and Extension specialist. The forum is a follow-up to an educational trip that Purdue International Extension sponsored to Costa Rica this past summer. Participants included Purdue graduate students, Extension educators, members of the Indiana agribusiness community, and leaders in Indiana rural development. While in Costa Rica, the country's agriculture and possible market access for specific Indiana agribusinesses were examined.
