Purdue Student Union Board to honor veterans on Nov. 10

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A special Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday (Nov. 10) in the Purdue Memorial Union's Great Hall.

Veterans Darrell I. Leap and Bob Wanstrath will speak during the ceremony, sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board.

Leap is a former officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve who spent time oceanographic surveying in the Persian Gulf in the early 1960s. He is now a professor emeritus of hydrogeology and geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. The title of his speech is "Freedom Isn't Free."

Wanstrath was on active duty for three years and served in Europe and Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. He has been a member of the American Legion for 34 years. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati.

The event will include the presentation of colors by the Navy ROTC; a brief history of Veterans Day by Bob Mindrum, director of the union; a salute by the American Legion; and veterans memorials. The Purduettes and Purdue University Bands also will perform.

The Purdue Student Union Board is sponsoring the event.
