Jischke to discuss Purdue's state budget request

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke on Wednesday (Dec. 13) will discuss Purdue's 2007-2009 budget requests to the state legislature.

From 2-3 p.m. during WBAA radio's live call-in show "AM 920 Magazine," Jischke will field questions from host David Bunte and the listening audience.

In fiscal year 2005-2006, Purdue received less than it did during the 2000-2001 year. This year's state contribution of $277.9 million includes an $8.5 million payment that the state has withheld for five years. Without that payment, this year's state contribution to the Purdue general fund is just seven-tenths of a percent higher than it was six years ago. The state's flat funding levels have occurred in an era of a weakened state economy, reduced tax base and dwindling state cash reserves.

"Business and government leaders in Indiana have recognized that an excellent system of public education — from pre-kindergarten through graduate school — is indispensable to the creation of a healthy society and a strong economy," Bunte said. "Well-funded research universities are the engines that fuel prosperity."

Jischke will discuss requests for money to complete new buildings and repair older ones. The university is also seeking money to ensure that funds are available to attract and retain top faculty and staff. Jischke will describe how new initiatives will strengthen both Purdue and the state.

To ask questions, local listeners can call (765) 496-1999. Listeners outside the local calling area can call toll-free at (866) 922-2101. WBAA's AM signal reaches approximately two-thirds of Indiana and can be heard globally via the station's Web site.

Jischke appears on the show monthly, typically on the first Wednesday of the month, to discuss community and university issues. Past interview topics have included the Purdue Research Park, strategic plan and sports fan behavior. Previous interviews are archived on the station's Web site.
