Sponsored by Purdue Musical Organizations and the Purdue Student Union Board, the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms. Doors will open at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment media day September 3
Journalists are invited to learn about a century long, first-of-its-kind study to develop better forest management practices. The Purdue-led study - the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment - seeks to find how to most effectively regenerate valuable oak and hickory forests while examining the effects of various management strategies on plant and animals species like endangered timber rattlesnakes, Cerulean warblers and Indiana bats. Other animals to be studied include woodland salamanders, songbirds and box turtles. Some types of animals may be available to photograph or videotape. More

Training day helps producers unravel forage issues
Purdue University will host a Forage Management Training Day Sept. 4 in West Lafayette for producers and industry representatives to learn about fertilizing forages, proper harvest management and coated seeds, among other issues.

"We'll discuss best management practices and how to get the most out of your forage stand," said Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension forage management expert. "I hope people better understand not only how to do these things, but also why they should do it."

Comedian Lewis Black to perform at Elliott Hall of Music
Stand-up comedian Lewis Black will perform as part of his Comedy Central Live "Let Them Eat Cake" tour at 8 p.m. Sept. 7 in Purdue University's Elliott Hall of Music.

Purdue's Student Concert Committee is presenting the performance, which is produced by Live Nation.

Acoustics and engineering meet biomedicine in novel symposium
American and European experts in acoustics and bio-engineering will present novel approaches on the emerging biomedical field of audible acoustic measurements and analysis during a Sept. 8-9 symposium at Purdue University.

Breakthroughs in the field of sonic measurements and analysis are leading to new medical treatments in critical care; heart-related issues; sleep disorders; orthopedic and sports injuries; ear, nose and throat maladies; hearing problems; and speech disorders. The conference will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering.

No Child Left Behind has produced benefits, but unintended consequences

A national education accountability law may be forcing teachers to focus on the basics at the expense of more complex skills such as team building and creativity, says a Purdue University expert.

Sidney Moon, associate dean of learning and engagement in Purdue's College of Education and a professor of educational studies, says that six years into the federal reform of the public educational system known as No Child Left Behind, problems persist in schools.

New Purdue Theatre season to showcase flavors of love

The 2008-09 Purdue Theatre season will include a variety of productions ranging from love stories to comedy to a glimpse of horror.

"Variety's the very spice of life, and this season we invite our audience to savor the many flavors of love," said Rich Rand, chair of the Division of Theatre. "Come to our Marquee and Horizon productions and experience stories heartwarming and surreal, tragic and edgy, radiant and romantic, bitter and sweet."

Purdue taps Emory exec as VP for physical facilities

Purdue University officials on Monday (Aug. 25) announced that Robert McMains, associate vice president of facilities management at Emory University, has been named Purdue's vice president for physical facilities, effective Oct. 1.

"Bob has extensive experience in facilities operations, personnel administration, planning and budgeting," said Purdue President France A. Córdova. "We were particularly impressed by Bob's leadership in sustainability efforts at Emory University, where he helped create a dynamic, results-oriented program that has generated positive results throughout all levels of the university and community."

Outstanding women in agriculture recognized by Purdue

Two women were recognized for their outstanding achievements and dedication to agriculture in Indiana by receiving the Purdue University Women in Agriculture awards on Friday (Aug. 15) during a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair.

The two award winners this year are Helen Witte of Wells County and Beth Bechdol of DeKalb County. A committee consisting of Purdue Extension Women in Agriculture team members selected the two as the 2008 winners from among several applicants.

Foster named interim head of agricultural economics department

Ken Foster, a Purdue professor of agricultural economics, has been appointed interim head of the university's Department of Agricultural Economics. He had been associate head of the department and director of graduate programs since 2004.

Foster succeeds Sally Thompson, who will be taking a leave of absence from Purdue. She intends to assume a position with the Economic Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, she said.

49 professors to be inducted into Purdue's 'Book of Great Teachers'

The names of 49 Purdue University professors will be added to the Book of Great Teachers, which honors outstanding teaching faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in the classroom.

The Aug. 28 induction, which occurs once every five years, will take place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Purdue President France A. Córdova and Provost Randy Woodson will recognize the honorees.
