The Native American Educational and Cultural Center at Purdue University for the first time will celebrate Native American Heritage Month in November through cultural presentations, music, movies and art.

Purdue partners with Kauffman for Global Entrepreneurship Week
Purdue University is participating in Global Entrepreneurship Week from Nov. 16-22 to celebrate the role that entrepreneurs play in job creation, innovation and economic recovery and how college students can be a part of that movement.

Global Entrepreneurship Week, cofounded in 2008 by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Make Your Mark, a business-led, government-backed campaign in the United Kingdom, will connect young people through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.

Science journalists to be honored at Purdue Nov. 11-13
Purdue University will honor science journalists from around the world on Nov. 11-13 during the third Science Journalism Laureates Program.

The group, which includes eight previous and four new laureates, will participate in a public town hall meeting from 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 12) in the Lawson Computer Science Building foyer. The topic is "Science Journalism in the Age of Twitter." Moira Gunn, host of "Tech Nation" and "BioTech Nation," which are heard on National Public Radio, will moderate the discussion. A public reception will follow the talk.

Economist: Renewable fuel talk turning to cellulosic gas, diesel
A Purdue University agricultural economist and energy policy analyst has changed his tune on renewable fuels.

"We don't just talk about ethanol. We talk about biofuels," said Wally Tyner.

Purdue Black Cultural Center announces Cultural Arts Series lineup
The Purdue University Black Cultural Center announced its Cultural Arts Series programs for the Fall 2009 semester.

The series theme, Hip-Hop: A Social and Political Message of Black Identity, includes the Sept. 10 Rap Session - Community Dialogue on Race and Hip Hop," followed on Sept. 29 by a lecture and performance by educator and rapper Will Power. During Homecoming weekend, the Black Cultural Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary, and on Nov. 11 the founder of the Hip Hop Summit Action Network will speak.

'Remember the Titans' coach to speak at Purdue
Herman Boone, coach of the 1971 high school football team in Alexandria, Va., that inspired the movie "Remember the Titans," will speak Dec. 8 at Purdue.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. at Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. There will be a meet-and-greet with Boone immediately following the talk in the West Faculty Lounge of Purdue Memorial Union.

Liberal arts series highlights careers, alumni
C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb, Purdue President France A. Córdova and men's basketball coach Matt Painter will be among 14 speakers in a series featuring the university's College of Liberal Arts.

The fall class and speakers series is part of the LA Influentials course that is being offered to liberal arts students and taught by Irwin (Bud) Weiser, interim dean of Purdue's College of Liberal Arts.

Purdue Musical Organizations to present 'The Spirit of the Season'
Purdue Musical Organizations will present four public performances of the 76th annual Purdue Christmas Show "The Spirit of the Season" on Dec. 12-13.

"This year’s show is different," said Bill Griffel, Purdue Musical Organizations director. "We're telling an original story with character dialogue between the musical numbers, which will help deliver a beautiful message. To help us tell our story, we’re bringing back the big screens, so there’s not a bad seat in the house."

Purdue to host winter commencement ceremonies
Purdue University will award degrees at its West Lafayette campus on Dec. 20 and at its Calumet campus on Dec. 15.

Ceremonies for the West Lafayette campus are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in Elliott Hall of Music. The Calumet campus ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. in the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville, Ind.

Purdue receives 400 doses of H1N1 vaccine

The Purdue Student Health Center has received 400 doses of H1N1 vaccine through the Tippecanoe County Health Department.

The Health Center also reported that the supply of seasonal flu vaccine has been exhausted and that no additional supplies are expected to be available this year.

Purdue University is profiling five student-veterans on a special Web site being launched Wednesday (Nov. 11) for Veterans Day.

Located at http://www.purdue.edu/fivestudents, the site was created by Purdue Marketing and Media staff to honor the university's tradition of military service and to recognize a new generation of veterans at Purdue. The site features photos of the five students, along with biographical information about their military service and how they came to be at Purdue.

The number of students with flulike illnesses seen at the Purdue Student Health Center reached 239 for the week of Sunday (Nov. 8) through Saturday (Nov. 14), down slightly from the previous week.

Since Aug. 30, 1,249 have reported being ill, about 3 percent of the total student body on the West Lafayette campus. More

Purdue Research Foundation recognized 32 faculty and staff entrepreneurs, inventors

Thirty-two Purdue University faculty and staff were recognized at the Purdue Research Foundation's seventh annual Inventors Recognition Dinner on Thursday (Nov. 5) in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom.

The event highlighted the accomplishments of university faculty and staff whose discoveries already have, or may soon, result in commercial applications taken to the marketplace.

Purdue-IU led team wins global entrepreneurship competition

GlucaGo LLC, a life sciences company led by a trio from Purdue and Indiana universities, captured the 2009 Global Idea to Product Competition and claimed the $10,000 top prize, beating 14 other teams that qualified by winning local competitions.

The Global I2P entrepreneurship event, held Oct. 30 and 31 in Austin, Texas, featured teams from 19 universities and eight countries - Great Britain, Portugal, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Brazil, and U.S. competitors from Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado and New Hampshire.
