Veterans, military service members honored in Indiana libraries
More than 70 Indiana libraries are honoring veterans and members of U.S. armed forces by participating in the Veterans Day Our Heroes' Tree program.

The program, sponsored by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University, is a way to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by current service members, veterans and deceased service members, said Kathy Broniarczyk, director of outreach for the Military Family Research Institute.

The ADVANCE-Purdue research team will hold an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 9 in Room 214 C-D, Stewart Center.

Purdue's Black Cultural Center to host civil rights leader
Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., co-founder, president and CEO of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, will speak Nov. 11 at Purdue University.

His talk, sponsored by Purdue's Black Cultural Center, begins at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Best-selling author, biologist to speak at Purdue sustainability event
Alaskan biologist Bill Streever has given new meaning to how cold the world actually can be near the Arctic. Now, the author of the best-selling book "Cold: Adventures in the World's Frozen Places" will bring his story to Purdue University with an Oct. 21 lecture.

Streever, in a free event sponsored by Purdue's Discovery Park, will speak at 4 p.m. in Room 121 of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, 1201 W. State St. A book signing will follow in the center's Venture Café. The events are free and open to the public.

Purdue conference to help minority business owners network
Purdue University's Office of Supplier Diversity Development will host the fifth annual Relationships to Partnerships Session on Nov. 12 to help minority and women business owners in Indiana network with prospective clients.

The daylong conference, which is being co-hosted by the Supplier Diversity Development Coalition of Greater Lafayette, will start at 8 a.m. in Stewart Center and feature keynote speaker Wendy Lewis, senior vice president of diversity and strategic alliances for Major League Baseball.

Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet Company showcases dance works
The New York-based Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet Company will celebrate works by contemporary dance visionaries and showcase a wide-ranging spectrum of both American and international repertory Nov. 13 in Purdue Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

The 8 p.m. event is presented by Purdue Convocations and includes a pre-show discussion by a member of the Cedar Lake artistic staff, who will talk about the company's history and the evening's repertoire. The discussion will take place at 7 p.m. in the Stewart Center Gallery.

Purdue U.S.-Canada border conference to feature trade, security and mobility experts
The NEXTRANS Center, with the assistance of the government of Canada (avec l'appui du gouvernement du Canada) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), will host a Nov. 16 conference on U.S.-Canada border trade, security and mobility challenges.

The daylong event - titled In Step, In Line, On Time: Regional Strategies for Trade, Security, and Mobility Challenges at the U.S.-Canada Border - will provide an opportunity for researchers and private-sector stakeholders in the Great Lakes region to engage in a dialogue with high-level officials of the U.S. and Canadian government.

Free leadership workshop to be held in Indianapolis
Purdue University's Manufacturing Extension Partnership will offer a workshop on Nov. 20 in Indianapolis that will focus on leadership.

The workshop, "Leadership Is an Attitude," is free and open to the public. It will especially benefit business owners, management teams and executives, and CEOs.

Old Masters visit Purdue Nov. 8-10

Ten leaders in a variety of fields will visit Purdue University Nov. 8-10 for the 60th annual Old Masters program, which will give students the opportunity to interact with successful professionals.

The Old Masters program, which is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, got its start in 1950. Since then, more than 500 Old Masters have visited campus and shared their ideas and experiences with students.

Purdue Research Foundation recognized 32 faculty and staff entrepreneurs, inventors

Thirty-two Purdue University faculty and staff were recognized at the Purdue Research Foundation's seventh annual Inventors Recognition Dinner on Thursday (Nov. 5) in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom.

The event highlighted the accomplishments of university faculty and staff whose discoveries already have, or may soon, result in commercial applications taken to the marketplace.

Purdue-IU led team wins global entrepreneurship competition

GlucaGo LLC, a life sciences company led by a trio from Purdue and Indiana universities, captured the 2009 Global Idea to Product Competition and claimed the $10,000 top prize, beating 14 other teams that qualified by winning local competitions.

The Global I2P entrepreneurship event, held Oct. 30 and 31 in Austin, Texas, featured teams from 19 universities and eight countries - Great Britain, Portugal, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Brazil, and U.S. competitors from Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado and New Hampshire.

Jay Akridge, Purdue's Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture, announced the appointment Monday (Nov. 2).

Purdue professor wins commercialization award

Karthik Ramani, a professor of mechanical engineering, has won the 2009-2010 Outstanding Commercialization Award for Purdue University Faculty.

Ramani is being honored for his work as chief scientist with Imaginestics, now called VizSeek, a Purdue Research Park company that provides an online shape search engine for businesses.

Purdue sees upswing in flulike illness

The number of students reporting flulike illnesses continues to rise following a steady decline.

Between Monday (Oct. 26) and Friday (Oct. 30), 165 students with flu symptoms contacted the Purdue Student Health Center, bringing the totals since Aug. 30 to 739. Since then, 115 samples were sent to the state for testing to determine if they were H1N1; 59 were positive and 24 were negative. The results for the remainder are pending.

Stauffer, Cornell receive distinguished veterinary alumni honors

Lawrence Stauffer and Karen Cornell were recently selected as distinguished alumni of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Stauffer, of Delphi, Ind., earned his DVM from Purdue University in 1967. In addition to his duties as owner of the Delphi Veterinary Clinic, he has provided veterinary care at the Indiana State Fair for 38 years and has served two terms on the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) Board of Directors. He was the IVMA representative on the Indiana Controlled Substances Committee and the Purdue/Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory Advisory Committee.

Purdue's Leslie Geddes had distinguished teaching, research career

Leslie Geddes, a Purdue University distinguished professor of biomedical engineering and recipient of the National Medal of Technology, died on Sunday (Oct. 25). He was 88.

The Showalter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering, Geddes created innovations ranging from burn treatments to miniature defibrillators and ligament repair to tiny blood pressure monitors for premature infants.
