An engorged deer tick sits precariously on the fingertip of Catherine Hill, a Purdue entomology assistant professor and tick genome project lead investigator. Ticks can spread a variety of illnesses to humans and other animals, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and tick-borne encephalitic diseases.
