U.S.News ranks Purdue's graduate programs among country's best

Purdue University's programs remain among the best in the nation in U.S.News & World Report's rankings of the top graduate schools released Thursday (April 23).

"The quality of graduate programs impacts and enhances the overall educational quality of a university," said Purdue Provost Randy Woodson. "These rankings reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that a Purdue degree stands for a world-class educational experience that retains its value in the real world. This, in turn, translates into the ability to attract top-notch students who want to share in and be a part of our progress."

Even in tough times, college seniors finding jobs

Even in an economic downturn, college seniors with the right preparation and perseverance can find jobs, a Purdue careers executive and some students say.

Timothy Luzader, director of Purdue University's Center for Career Opportunities, says employers will continue to look at students from schools where they have built good relationships. "Purdue has a great reputation among employers," he says. "They respect the rigor of the curriculum."

Purdue names Diaz executive VP for business and finance, treasurer

Alphonso V. Diaz has been named Purdue University's executive vice president for business and finance, treasurer, effective July 1. As the university's chief financial officer, Diaz will report to Purdue President France A. Córdova and the board of trustees.

"Al Diaz is an experienced administrator. He is skillful at getting people to work together toward common goals," Córdova said. "His deep experience in leading complex organizations, in which he has interacted with a diversity of stakeholders including elected officials and community members, is exactly what Purdue needs as we move forward to meet our strategic goals. Among these are to expand human resources, rehabilitate aging facilities, plan new buildings for increased student and research success, and find new opportunities to generate revenue in a tough economic climate."

Purdue celebration to honor diversity champion Cornell Bell

Purdue University's Krannert School of Management will honor the life and contributions of diversity advocate Cornell A. Bell on April 3.

"A Celebration of Cornell Bell" begins at 4 p.m. in the Krannert Drawing Room on the main floor of the Krannert Building. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and the public are invited to attend.

Krannert revises two-year MBA program curriculum

In an effort to better prepare students for the changing needs of businesses and to develop the next generation of business leaders, the Krannert School of Management is revising the curriculum for its two-year MBA and one-year MSIA programs.

"Business organizations today are more global, more technology dependent and less hierarchical," said Manohar Kalwani, head of Krannert's Department of Management who led the process to change the curriculum. "As organizations have become flatter, business leaders are expected to foresee opportunities and address problems that cut across functional boundaries. MBAs today rarely start their careers in a given area and finish their careers in the same area."

Purdue's Student-Managed Venture Fund invests $100,000 in Purdue Research Park company

Purdue University's Student-Managed Venture Fund, administered by the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and the Krannert School of Management, is investing $100,000 in Kylin Therapeutics Inc.

The funding is part of a $2 million round of financing led by In-vivo Ventures and Golden Pine Ventures. The funds will help advance Kylin Therapeutics' lead cancer therapy to the marketplace.

Conference to address challenges in today's global supply chain

Corporate executives will join experts from the Krannert School of Management's Global Supply Chain Management Initiative Center for a Feb. 6 conference to discuss new challenges in managing the global supply chain.

Preregistration is required for the annual conference at Purdue Memorial Union, which is open to the public. It is sponsored by the Global Supply Chain Management Initiative and the Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises, joint operations and supply chain education, research and outreach centers, in conjunction with Purdue's Center for International Business Education and Research.

Purdue to launch entrepreneurship assistance clinic

Purdue University's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship this spring semester will offer free consultations to students, faculty and staff interested in starting a business.

The Entrepreneurship Assistance Clinic, located in Room 231 of the Burton Morgan Center in Purdue's Discovery Park, opened during the week of Jan. 12 as a resource for aspiring entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Hours during the semester are Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. The clinic will be closed during the Spring Break week of March 16-20.

Krannert's executive MBA ranks 14th in WSJ value poll

The executive MBA at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management offers one of the highest returns on investment, according to a new ranking by the Wall Street Journal.

Five years after graduation, the value of the Krannert degree ranked 14th when factoring in the cost of education. The WSJ article also noted that for public universities, low tuition and a cost-efficient approach often bring more value than brand names.

Purdue's Krannert School joins entrepreneurship effort for veterans

Purdue University's Krannert School of Management has joined a nationwide consortium aimed at helping veterans start their own businesses.

Created at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management in 2007, the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities trains veterans disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan in entrepreneurship and small business management.

Trustees OK Wang Hall architect, master plans for two campuses

The Purdue University board of trustees on Friday (Nov. 21) approved hiring an architect to plan Seng-Liang Wang Hall, the College of Engineering's new electrical and computer engineering building in Discovery Park.

Lawyer, writer and actor Ben Stein will give the keynote address Oct. 23 at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management's eighth annual Leadership Speakers Series.

Krannert students to 'Trick-or-Can' for charity

Members of a Purdue University student organization will don costumes and take to the streets on Halloween night to collect food for a local charity.

The Krannert School of Management's Management Ambassadors club will host its seventh annual "Trick-or-Can" event Oct. 31 in the University Farms neighborhood in West Lafayette. Ambassadors will drop off bags at homes in University Farms during the week of Oct. 13 that homeowners can use to package their donations of canned goods and non-perishable food items. The students will canvas the neighborhood in teams on Halloween to pick up the donated items, which will be distributed to Lafayette Urban Ministry.

Krannert professors address causes, effects of U.S. financial crisis

Members of the public interested in learning more about the American financial crisis can now find answers through Purdue's Krannert School of Management.

Five Krannert faculty members held a panel discussion on Oct. 3 about the causes and implications of the current U.S. financial crisis. Later that day, the House of Representatives passed a $700 billion bailout bill aimed at calming the turmoil on Wall Street.

Krannert's Executive MBA captures top 25 spot in WSJ rankings

The Executive MBA program at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management is among the top 25 in the world in new rankings released by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday (Sept. 30).

Krannert's program ranked No. 22 overall and was No. 8 among U.S. public institutions. Purdue was the only Indiana college included in the top 25.

Purdue professor says new federal bailout plan needed soon

A Purdue University economics professor says congressional leaders should get back to the drawing board after the failure of a proposed $700 billion federal bailout of Wall Street.

"Lawmakers need to find common ground on a proposal that they can pass quickly," David Hummels says. "If they are not going to support any type of plan, they should make it clear that intervention is off the table. The worst thing that can happen at this point is a longer period of indecision."

Purdue students earn predoctoral training awards

Committee named to find candidates for VP position

Purdue University has formed a search committee to identify candidates for a new executive vice president for business and finance and treasurer.

Diane Denis, senior associate dean of the Krannert School of Management, will chair the committee to seek a successor to Morgan R. Olsen, who is leaving Purdue to become executive vice president and treasurer at Arizona State University.

Purdue's Krannert School moves from minors to concentrations

Students in Purdue's Krannert School of Management will have more options for undergraduate study in management after an academic restructuring that transforms undergraduate minors to concentrations.

Steve Green, the Basil S. Turner Distinguished Professor of Management, said the changes were made during a review by the management undergraduate task force. Green chaired the committee, which meets periodically to review the structure of the school for efficiency and possible improvements.
