Purdue-IU led team wins global entrepreneurship competition

GlucaGo LLC, a life sciences company led by a trio from Purdue and Indiana universities, captured the 2009 Global Idea to Product Competition and claimed the $10,000 top prize, beating 14 other teams that qualified by winning local competitions.

The Global I2P entrepreneurship event, held Oct. 30 and 31 in Austin, Texas, featured teams from 19 universities and eight countries - Great Britain, Portugal, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Brazil, and U.S. competitors from Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado and New Hampshire.

Krannert students compete in FBI, Honda marketing competitions

Two marketing classes in Purdue University's Krannert School of Management are testing their skills in contests aimed at promoting two familiar brands.

Priya Chari Francisco, who teaches Management 425: Marketing Planning and Research, said one class is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the other is promoting a new hybrid car from Honda.

Purdue Libraries celebrate new interactive classroom, start second of three-phase renovation

Purdue University Libraries isn't just about books and resource materials anymore.

A new 40-seat interactive classroom aimed at engaging students in participatory activities has been completed in the Management and Economics Library on campus. It is the first phase of a three-part, $4.2 million renovation project that will transform the Management and Economics Library - also known as MEL - into a state-of-the-art business information center.

Founder and 'chief shoe giver' of TOMS shoes to speak at Purdue

Blake Mycoskie, entrepreneur and founder of TOMS shoes, will speak at Purdue on Thursday (Oct. 29) as part of the Purdue Series on Corporate Citizenship and Ethics. The 7 p.m. talk, in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse, is free and open to the public.

Mycoskie's talk is presented by the Krannert School of Management and the College of Education's James F. Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship and is sponsored by the Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union, Karl and Kathy Krapek, and the Chrysler Foundation.

Purdue trustees approve faculty appointments, new program and aircraft purchases

The Purdue University board of trustees on Friday (Oct. 2) ratified the appointments of three named professors, approved a new degree program and the purchase of 17 replacement aircraft for a flight degree program.

Trustees approved the appointment of Michael A. Campion as the Herman C. Krannert Professor of Management in the Krannert School of Management; Torbert Rocheford as the Patterson Endowed Chair in Translational Genomics for Crop Improvement; and Wallace Tyner as the James and Lois Ackerman Professor in Agricultural Economics.

Five to be honored at Krannert dinner

Five people will receive awards during the annual Krannert Leadership Speaker Series dinner Oct. 1.

Tickets are on sale for the dinner, which raises money for scholarships. The series has raised more than $125,000 in scholarship money for undergraduate and graduate students in the Krannert School of Management.

Student callout set for Purdue's annual business plan competition

A callout for the 2010 Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 and 9 in Discovery Park's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121.

The 23rd annual competition, scheduled for Feb. 23, offers a total prize package of $100,000 to the student teams that develop and present business plans for viable new ventures.

Bootcamp at Purdue's Krannert School to teach vets business basics

Veterans from across the Midwest and Eastern United States have arrived at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management for an intensive seven-day course aimed at helping them start their own businesses.

Created at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management in 2007, the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities trains veterans disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan in entrepreneurship and small-business management.

Cosier to step down as dean of Krannert School of Management

Richard A. Cosier, who has served as dean of Purdue University's Krannert School of Management for more than a decade, will step down from his position, effective June 30, 2010.

Cosier will remain at Purdue as the Leeds Professor of Management, a position he currently holds in addition to serving as dean.

Purdue ranks among nation's top universities

Purdue University ranked 22nd among the nation's public universities and 61st among all universities, according to U.S.News & World Report magazine rankings released Thursday (Aug. 20).

The ranking is a move up from Purdue's ranking of 26th last year. Purdue ranked 61st among all universities, tied with Clemson University, Fordham University, Texas A&M University and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. This also is an improvement for Purdue, which ranked 66th last year.

Former labor secretary to give Krannert keynote address

U.S.News ranks Purdue's graduate programs among country's best

Purdue University's programs remain among the best in the nation in U.S.News & World Report's rankings of the top graduate schools released Thursday (April 23).

"The quality of graduate programs impacts and enhances the overall educational quality of a university," said Purdue Provost Randy Woodson. Even in tough times, college seniors finding jobs

Even in an economic downturn, college seniors with the right preparation and perseverance can find jobs, a Purdue careers executive and some students say.

Timothy Luzader, director of Purdue University's Center for Career Opportunities, says employers will continue to look at students from schools where they have built good relationships. "Purdue has a great reputation among employers," he says. "They respect the rigor of the curriculum."

Purdue names Diaz executive VP for business and finance, treasurer

Alphonso V. Diaz has been named Purdue University's executive vice president for business and finance, treasurer, effective July 1. As the university's chief financial officer, Diaz will report to Purdue President France A. Córdova and the board of trustees.

"Al Diaz is an experienced administrator. He is skillful at getting people to work together toward common goals," Córdova said. "His deep experience in leading complex organizations, in which he has interacted with a diversity of stakeholders including elected officials and community members, is exactly what Purdue needs as we move forward to meet our strategic goals. Among these are to expand human resources, rehabilitate aging facilities, plan new buildings for increased student and research success, and find new opportunities to generate revenue in a tough economic climate."

Purdue celebration to honor diversity champion Cornell Bell

Krannert revises two-year MBA program curriculum

In an effort to better prepare students for the changing needs of businesses and to develop the next generation of business leaders, the Krannert School of Management is revising the curriculum for its two-year MBA and one-year MSIA programs.

"Business organizations today are more global, more technology dependent and less hierarchical," said Manohar Kalwani, head of Krannert's Department of Management who led the process to change the curriculum. "As organizations have become flatter, business leaders are expected to foresee opportunities and address problems that cut across functional boundaries. MBAs today rarely start their careers in a given area and finish their careers in the same area."

Purdue's Student-Managed Venture Fund invests $100,000 in Purdue Research Park company

Purdue University's Student-Managed Venture Fund, administered by the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship and the Krannert School of Management, is investing $100,000 in Kylin Therapeutics Inc.

The funding is part of a $2 million round of financing led by In-vivo Ventures and Golden Pine Ventures. The funds will help advance Kylin Therapeutics' lead cancer therapy to the marketplace.

Conference to address challenges in today's global supply chain

Corporate executives will join experts from the Krannert School of Management's Global Supply Chain Management Initiative Center for a Feb. 6 conference to discuss new challenges in managing the global supply chain.

Preregistration is required for the annual conference at Purdue Memorial Union, which is open to the public. It is sponsored by the Global Supply Chain Management Initiative and the Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises, joint operations and supply chain education, research and outreach centers, in conjunction with Purdue's Center for International Business Education and Research.

Purdue to launch entrepreneurship assistance clinic

Purdue University's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship this spring semester will offer free consultations to students, faculty and staff interested in starting a business.

The Entrepreneurship Assistance Clinic, located in Room 231 of the Burton Morgan Center in Purdue's Discovery Park, opened during the week of Jan. 12 as a resource for aspiring entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Hours during the semester are Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. The clinic will be closed during the Spring Break week of March 16-20.

Krannert's executive MBA ranks 14th in WSJ value poll

The executive MBA at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management offers one of the highest returns on investment, according to a new ranking by the Wall Street Journal.

Five years after graduation, the value of the Krannert degree ranked 14th when factoring in the cost of education. The WSJ article also noted that for public universities, low tuition and a cost-efficient approach often bring more value than brand names.

Trustees OK Wang Hall architect, master plans for two campuses

The Purdue University board of trustees on Friday (Nov. 21) approved hiring an architect to plan Seng-Liang Wang Hall, the College of Engineering's new electrical and computer engineering building in Discovery Park.

The board also approved campus master plans for Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and Purdue North Central.
