September 10, 2007 Hospitality, tourism management offers speaker seriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University hospitality and tourism management department is sponsoring the 2007 Darden Series beginning Thursday (Sept. 13).The five-session lecture series, which is free and open to the public, brings industry leaders into the classroom to give students a sense of the industry's current status, its future and what students need to know for success. All talks begin at 10:30 a.m. "Attendees can meet some of the most respected and dynamic leaders in the hospitality and tourism business," said Kelly Virginia Phelan, graduate instructor and coordinator of the program. "Visiting executives share their experiences and knowledge of the industry, offering real-life examples to complement textbook material. This is a significant opportunity for students and the public to broaden their horizons and learn more about the industry." Richard Rivera, president and CEO of restaurant development company Rubicon Enterprises and chairman of the National Restaurant Association, will be the first speaker in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall, Room 224. On Sept. 25, the speaker is Cynthia Lett, principal of The Lett Group, an event and meeting manager who teaches business and social etiquette courses at George Washington University and consults for international corporations. She will speak in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse as part of the Hospitality and Tourism Management department's Career Day. The remaining talks, which will be held in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall, Room 224, include: * Sept. 27 – Henry Wainer, president and owner of Sid Wainer & Sons Specialty Produce and Specialty Foods, who has been featured in countless major newspaper and magazine articles and appeared in several Food Network cooking and talk shows. * Oct. 2 – Bruce White, founder, chairman and CEO of White Lodging Services Corporation, a hotel ownership, development and operating company responsible for 115 hotels in 14 states. * Oct. 23 – Lynne Forsman, the original owner and current management consultant for Nautical Destinations, an Annapolis, Md., yacht company offering customized group events and currently serves on the board of directors of the Green Meeting Industry Council.
