October 17, 2007 Purdue Galleries joins Department of Visual and Performing ArtsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Beginning this semester, Purdue University Galleries has joined the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The integration has made it possible to house all the visual arts personnel on campus under one roof, said David Sigman, head of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. "Previously, Purdue Galleries, which are made up of the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in Purdue Memorial Union and the Stewart Center Gallery, were separate from the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts," he said. "By combining the areas, we are better able to facilitate greater interaction between Galleries and visual and performing arts students, faculty and staff." Galleries director Craig Martin said, "The Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Union and the Stewart Center Gallery will continue to serve as a vital venue to art at Purdue, with exhibitions of regional, national and international appeal. The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries will continue its focus as an exhibition venue for Purdue's faculty and students." All the galleries have new exhibits set to open Monday (Oct. 22). Opening in the Robert L. Ringel Gallery is "Does Gender Still Matter?," an exhibit that examines current constructs of masculinity, femininity, androgyny, etc., from the viewpoints of seven artists from around the country. "Dried – Cracked – Wet – Dripping – Blooming: Installations by Charles A. Gick" will be featured in Stewart Center Gallery. Gick is a Purdue associate professor of art and design who has had his interdisciplinary installations exhibited nationally and internationally. The Rueff Galleries will feature "Art and Design Faculty Exhibit 2007," which will include a collection of current works from the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts faculty. The exhibits are part of October's Experience Liberal Arts, which is featuring a variety of lectures, films, performances, events and exhibits that reflect the college's ongoing coursework and research in the arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences.
