December 5, 2007 Postharvest recertification workshop will focus on grain storageWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Beck Agricultural Center will be the site for a postharvest training and recertification workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 19.The workshop is co-sponsored by the Indiana Grain and Feed Association and Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service. Purdue specialists will discuss new methods for storing grain, controlling pests and preventing disease. "One of the goals of the workshop is to update grain managers on best practices for managing their grain in storage," said Linda Mason, a Purdue professor of entomology and instructor for the workshop. "We want to teach managers how they can maintain grain quality and control insects within the bin." Workshop sessions and presenters include: * Aflatoxin prevention and mycotoxin management, Charles Woloshuk, Purdue botany and plant pathology professor. * Aeration and quality grain management, Dirk Maier, Purdue agricultural and biological engineering professor. * Pest ID – What and why do you fumigate, Mason. * Individualizing the fumigation management plan – precision fumigation, Mason. * Pesticide transportation and storage, Fred Whitford, coordinator of Purdue pesticide programs. Continuing credit hours, including Category 1-1, Category 7A-6, Category 7D-6 and Category RT-4, will be approved during this session. Registration is $80 prior to Dec. 10 and $100 after.
