December 14, 2007 Purdue Ag Fish Fry speaker will highlight White House experiencesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Andrew Card, former chief of staff for President George W. Bush, will be the guest speaker during the luncheon that begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. His talk, "Managing Amidst Crisis," will relate stories from his White House experiences, including those surrounding the terrorist attacks in September 2001. Card was with the president during a visit to a Florida school and informed Bush of the second plane crash. He was with the president throughout the ordeal and helped manage the administration's response to the critical and quickly changing situation. Card will draw analogies from these experiences to demonstrate how to deal with change, innovation and uncertainty in any environment. "Our alumni will find Card an engaging speaker who can relate his experience to some of the pressures and rapid changes that are now affecting the agricultural industry," said Donya Lester, executive secretary of the Purdue Ag Alumni Association. "I think the audience will enjoy an insider's perspective on crisis at the highest levels and learn how skills used in managing crises can be applied to the day-to-day activities of those in agribusiness." As chief of staff, Card was in charge of managing the White House. He served in that role from November 2000 through April 2006, making him the second-longest serving White House Chief of Staff. Card also served during the first Bush administration as the secretary of transportation and coordinated disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Andrew. He previously served as assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff for that administration. Card also held several positions in intergovernmental affairs for President Ronald Reagan. Card currently is a senior counselor for the public relations firm Fleischman-Hillard, serving on the international advisory board. Tickets for the Ag Alumni Fish Fry are $20 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available by contacting the Purdue Ag Alumni office at (765) 494-8593 or by e-mailing agalumni@purdue.edu.
