Purdue University President France A. Córdova will discuss her views on education in a global society during a Thursday (March 6) address in Indianapolis.

Córdova will present "Purdue: A Global University for Indiana" to the Economic Club of Indiana during its monthly luncheon in the 500 Ballroom of the Indiana Convention Center, 100 S. Capitol Ave. Lunch begins at noon, and Córdova will speak at 12:30 p.m.

Single tickets are $25 for members or $30 for non-members and can be purchased by calling (317) 264-3165 or online at http://www.economicclubofindiana.com.

The club has served as a forum for the discussion of public issues by national leaders for more than 30 years. Members of the Penrod Society, a group of young men whose motto is "For the support of cultural and educational activities in the Indianapolis area," created the club in 1974 based on a similar organization in Detroit and ran it for several years.

Over time, the Economics Club, now affiliated with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, has evolved into a setting where prominent speakers can present ideas in front of a large Midwestern audience. Former speakers have included Nobel laureates Milton Friedman, George Stigler and James Buchanan, cabinet members such as then-Secretary of Defense Richard B. Cheney and the Washington Post's Ben Bradlee.

Córdova became Purdue's 11th president on July 16. Prior to joining Purdue, she served as chancellor at the University of California Riverside. An internationally recognized astrophysicist, Córdova was chief scientist at NASA and a member of the staff of the Space Astronomy and Astrophysics Group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. She has additional higher education experience at the University of California Santa Barbara and Penn State University. She graduated cum laude from Stanford University and earned a doctorate in physics from the California Institute of Technology.
