March 5, 2008 Purdue to offer tasty reading event for childrenWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Parents can bring their children to Purdue at 4 p.m. Thursday (March 6) for a special event that includes books, crafts and treats.The event, Books & Chocolate Milk, will take place in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom. Sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board, the idea for the event came from the group's annual Books & Coffee, said Melanie Johnsen, director of traditional events for the Purdue Student Union Board. The event is free and open to the public. Angie Klink, the author of "Help Purdue Pete Find His Hammer," will be among the Purdue special guests who will read to the children, Johnsen said. Also during the event, Jennifer Dobbs, assistant professor of child development and family studies and director of Ready to Read, will conduct a 30-minute information session for the parents titled "How to read with your children and why it is important." She will give parents tips on how to maximize the reading experience and help children learn more effectively. After the reading session, children and parents will be able to work on a craft together and enjoy chocolate milk and cookies.
