Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

— Julie Hendon is the new director of membership for the Purdue Alumni Association. Hendon formerly served as assistant director of the Purdue President's Council.

— Jessica Teets has accepted the position of electronic media content specialist with Purdue Marketing Communications. Teets previously served as a communications coordinator with Purdue and also has worked with Arnett Health Systems.

 

Campus activities:

— An interdisciplinary team of experts has formed to spread the word about Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for health. The International Omega-3 Learning and Education Consortium for Health and Medicine, led by Purdue, will provide information to serve the general public but also the medical and veterinary communities, for whom recent and ongoing research may be of interest in treating patients and pets, said consortium director and Purdue nutrition professor Bruce Watkins. The group launched a Web site May 1, and is developing a variety of educational materials and planning outreach activities to target all age groups. Omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid found in cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines. For information, visit the Web site at http://www.omega3learning.purdue.edu/   

 

Gifts:

— James S. Remick, a longtime supporter of Purdue and the College of Technology, received the college's first Lifetime Achievement Award. Remick of Carmel, Ind., is president and CEO of Brittany Stamping and owns a consulting business, J.S. Remick Consulting, where he is a strategic adviser on lean manufacturing practices, supply chains and operational excellence. His career has focused on automotive safety and technology. At Purdue, he has served on various College of Technology departmental advisory committees, served as a member of the university's capital campaign steering committee, received the Boilermaker Award and funded the Jim and Sheli Remick Endowment in the College of Technology.

 

Faculty and staff honors:

— Ray Kavanaugh, head of Purdue University's Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, will receive the 2008 Michael E. Hurst Lifetime of Achievement in Education Award May 17 from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. The award honors an individual's career of commitment and accomplishment in academic instruction in the field of hospitality. Before joining Purdue in 1997, Kavanaugh was professor and director of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration at Oklahoma State University. His career includes academic appointments at the University of Central Florida and Florida State University as well as several years of industry experience.

 

Student honors:

—Whitney Emmert, a history major from Westfield, Ind., has been selected as Outstanding Student Clerical Employee at Harrison Hall.

— Jordan Allen, a computer and information technology major from Fort Wayne, Ind., has been selected as Outstanding Clerical Employee at Harrison Hall.

— Chelsea Miller of Northville, Mich., received Harrison Hall's John A. Sautter "Fire Up" Award. The award is given annually to a hall officer who demonstrates enthusiastic leadership throughout the year.
