May 9, 2008 Appointments, honors and activitiesAppointments and promotions:— The College of Education's counseling psychology doctoral program was reaccredited by the American Psychological Association's Commission on Accreditation at its meeting April 3-6. The program is accredited until the next commission visit in 2014. Accreditation is a voluntary process and accredited programs have been judged to be consistent with established guidelines and principles.
Campus activities: — The first two DiversiKey recipients will be honored at a reception from 10-11 a.m. Saturday (May 10) in the Materials and Electrial Engineering atrium. Sara "Carrie" Wooten, who will graduate from the College of Liberal Arts, and Vena Margaret Rosena Namukasa, who will graduate from the College of Agriculture, will be honored. Both women have been involved in Project L.E.A.D. (Learning Experience and Awareness in Diversity), which is a peer mentor training program for DiversiKey. Now in its third year, DiversiKey was created as a special Iron Key project and became an official certificate program of the university. Students are required to earn points in the areas of personal growth, interpersonal skills and community. — During the eighth annual Project Move Out from May 2-4, more than twice as many families as last year benefited from donations provided by Purdue students as they moved out of residence halls, apartments and houses. According to Harry Brown, assistant dean of students and director of Boiler Volunteer Network, thousands of students made donations that went to 488 needy families in the area, compared to 226 families in 2007 and 191 families in 2006. Through the weekend, 26 students, three Purdue staff members and three community members volunteers to sort items and help families as they "shopped" for free items from the donations. — Twenty-five students from the Purdue University Habitat for Humanity campus chapter will spend May 11-17 participating in the Cover Indiana bike tour. The ride starts in Evansville and winds its way more than 350 miles through southern Indiana to the finish in Indianapolis. Faculty and staff honors: — Herbert Moscowitz of the Krannert School of Management has been honored by the H-Index, which identifies the top professors in management science, production and operations management. Moscowitz is ranked eighth among his peers at 225 American colleges and universities. Few faculty members had an index score of 10 or higher. Moscowitz had a score of 16. Two other Krannert professors also made the 82-member list. Suresh Chand tied for 50th place and Kwei Tang tied for 65th place. — Edward J. Delp, Purdue University's Silicon Valley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named a member of the scientific advisory board of the Nokia Research Center in Tampere, Finland. The board is made up of international members from industry and academia and focuses on providing strategic guidance and evaluating scientific excellence at the center. Delp is on sabbatical at Tampere University of Technology, where he is a Finland Distinguished Professor. — Jan P. Allebach, the Michael J. and Katherine R. Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has received the 2008 Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award from the Purdue chapter of Sigma Xi, the international honor society of research scientists and engineers. Allebach is the third faculty member from Purdue's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering to receive the honor from the society's Purdue chapter. The society has about 60,000 active members in more than 500 chapters.
