Rosabeth Moss Kanter award recognizes work and family research

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - An assistant professor of sociology at the University of Georgia and one of his graduate students are the winners of the eighth annual Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research.

Jeremy Reynolds and Lydia Aletraris co-authored "Pursuing Preferences: The Creation and Resolution of Work Hour Mismatches." Published in the American Sociological Review, the research examines what happens when mismatches emerge between the number of hours employees are working and the hours they would prefer to work.

Both men and women, they found, were more likely to successfully resolve their mismatches when they left their employers than when they stayed.

The Center for Families at Purdue University and the Boston College Center for Work and Family developed the Kanter Award to raise awareness of work-family research among the scholar, consultant and practitioner communities.

With support from the Alliance for Work Life Progress, the award is named for Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a contributor to modern literature on work and family. The nomination process for award selection involves 41 scholarly reviewers from nine countries who choose the Kanter winners from more than 2,500 articles published in 74 scholarly journals. In addition to raising awareness of work-family research, the award also fosters debate about standards of excellence and helps identify the best studies on which to base future research.

Reynolds and Aletraris recently received the award at the 2008 Work-Life Forum Luncheon at the WorldatWork Total Rewards Conference in Philadelphia, Pa.
