2008 Honorary DegreeD. Craig Brater
A resident of Indianapolis, Dr. Brater is dean and the Walter J. Daly Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. He also serves as vice president for Indiana University, with responsibility for life sciences. He is widely recognized as a leader in academic medicine and clinical pharmacology. Born and raised in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Dr. Brater received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1967 and his medical degree in 1971, both from Duke University. He completed his medical residency and fellowship in clinical pharmacology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Brater began his academic career at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he served as assistant professor in pharmacology and medicine, and associate director of the General Clinical Research Center. He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in 1986 as a professor and director of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology. During this period he began his association with Purdue University, where he continues to serve as an adjunct professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 1990, Dr. Brater was appointed chairman and John B. Hickman Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He became the ninth dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2000, where he is responsible for 26 academic departments, more than 1,000 full-time faculty members and almost 2,500 students. In 2006, he was appointed vice president of Indiana University with responsibility for the life sciences. Dr. Brater is widely recognized for his seminal contributions in the field of clinical pharmacology and leadership in academic medicine. He has received many awards in recognition of his contributions, including the Duke University Medical Center Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. Dr. Brater, his wife Stephanie and his daughter Aimee are actively involved in the Indiana University-Moi University faculty exchange program in Kenya. The family has made multiple trips to Africa. Through this program, the Braters met their "Kenyan son," Michael, who is a graduate student at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
