Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange focuses on management strategies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The first Kentuckiana Dairy Exchange will give dairy producers the opportunity to visit other dairies and learn the latest from Purdue University and University of Kentucky experts July 29-31 in Barren County, Ky.

"The dairy exchange is designed to provide a forum for Indiana and Kentucky producers to interact and exchange ideas," said Tamilee Nennich, Purdue Extension dairy management specialist. "Dairy producers in these neighboring states share many common challenges, and the exchange will give them an opportunity to learn from each other."

Registration costs $50 and is due by July 22. However, $50 will be reimbursed to individuals that are members of Indiana Professional Dairy Producers and $30 will be reimbursed to non-members with the remaining amount going toward membership.  Individuals can register by calling Mike Schutz at (765) 494-9487 and sending a check to 125 S. Nutrient management, synchronization programs and rubber flooring will be featured during three presentations. Nennich will focus on conserving nutrients in manure, and strategies to get the most value possible. Schutz, Purdue Extension dairy management specialist, will highlight a study conducted by Purdue on rubber flooring and will discuss whether the expense is worthwhile from a cow health and longevity standpoint. Allen Bridges, Purdue Extension reproduction expert, will discuss various reproduction synchronization programs available and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each.

   *   Heifer producer Bill Davis of Mt. Hermon, Ky.

   *   Coral Hill Dairy of Glasgow, Ky.

   *   Bill and Billy Crist Dairy of Knob Lick, Ky.

   *   Don and Jeremy Kinslow Dairy of Smiths Gove, Ky.

   *   Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave, Ky.

   *   CPC Cmodities, Fountain Run, Ky.

   *   Elmore Dairy of Elizabethtown, Ky.

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. on July 29 at the Barren County Extension Office, located at 1463 W. Main St., Glasgow, Ky.

Bus transportation will be provided by the Indiana Professional Dairy Producers. A motor coach will depart at 7:30 a.m. on July 29 from North Town Hall, 418 N. Main St., Middlebury, Ind. The bus will stop at 10:30 a.m. at Kelsay Dairy Farm, 6848 N. 250 E. in Whiteland, Ind., and a final stop will be made at 11:45 a.m. the Scott County Fairgrounds, located off I-65 at Exit 29, east on Ind. 56 to U.S. 31/Gardner St., and south 1.5 miles in Scottsburg, Ind.

Vehicles may be left at each of three stops. The bus will return to Middlebury at 7:30 p.m. on July 31.

Participants are responsible for their own room reservations. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Days Inn in Glasgow, Ky., under "Dairy Exchange." To book a room, call (270) 651-1757 before July 15.
