October 7, 2008 Indiana Farm Sustainability Tour to feature timberWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Farm Sustainability Tour will be in Perry County from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT on Oct. 18 for Exploring Innovative Farm Systems for Profitable and Sustainable Indiana Agriculture."The participants will leave with an understanding of the timber industry, including alternatives for value-added products," said Margie Zoglmann, Purdue University Extension educator, Perry County. The tour will make stops at two local agricultural businesses in Perry County. The first stop will be Etienne's Timber, a family-owned and operated business by Phil and Joann Etienne. Etienne's Timber includes logging and a sawmill, with the logging business starting in 1973 and the sawmill added in 1983. The tour also will visit Bear Hollow, which is another Etienne's Timber entity. Bear Hollow is a value-added wood-product operation that has a wood shop featuring colored mulch, chainsaw woodcarvings and furniture. The schedule for the tour follows: * 9:30-10 a.m. Registration at Etienne's Timber. * 10 a.m. Opening and welcome by Zoglmann. * 10-11:15 a.m. History and tour of Etienne's Timber. * 11:15 a.m. to noon. Depart for Bear Hollow for lunch. * Noon. Panel discussion on resources for working with woodland owners. * 1-2 p.m. Overview and tour of Bear Hollow. * 2 p.m. Tour ends.
