Veterinary care isn't just for dogs and cats anymore

Veterinarian Lori Corriveau at Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine recently removed a malignant abdominal tumor weighing about 2.2 pounds from a koi, named Karla, owned by Dick Thomas of Lafayette.

With an increasing availability of sophisticated apparatus and modes of veterinary treatment, a growing number of pet-owners are opting to have their pets undergo the latest medical procedures to increase their longevity.

Though Karla may still have some traces of cancer, the removal of the tumor will buy her some time, according to Corriveau.

Karla, who’s a show fish, is probably worth $4,000, which made the $600 operation worthwhile for her owner.
