April 14, 2009 Purdue African-American students will be honored during programWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University students excelling in academics, leadership and service will be honored Saturday (April 18) during the Purdue Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff's 34th annual Academic and Service Awards program.The event, which is open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. More than 200 undergraduate students will be recognized for their achievements and will receive certificates and gifts. A senior African-American student with the best academic record in nursing or health sciences will receive the Clara Bell Award. The award is named in the memory of Bell, who was a professor emeritus and former director of Continuing Education in Purdue's School of Nursing. The caucus will present service and leadership awards to students based on nominations by Purdue faculty and staff. Parent of the Year and Department/Unit of the Year awards also will be given, based on student nominations. Quentin Roach, senior vice president and chief procurement officer at Bristol-Myers Squibb and a Purdue alumnus, will be the event's keynote speaker.
