Field day to examine invasive plants, control methods

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2009 Invasive Plant Management Field Day will be June 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Purdue University Wright Center.

"The program will provide information on the ecologic impacts of invasive plants, invasive plants that may be a problem in the future, and the results of research in invasive plant control and habitat restoration," said Lenny Farlee, Purdue Extension forester specialist.

Demonstration of equipment and materials used in controlling invasive plants will be provided at research locations, and researchers will be available to answer questions.

Workshop sessions include ecological impacts of invasives, emerging pests, chemical and mechanical options for controlling invasives, invasives control and habitat restoration, tree mower demonstration, and brush cutter demonstration.

Participants also will have the opportunity to travel to research locations, such as Purdue Wildlife Area, Cox-Haggerty Property and Martell Forest to see research, demonstrations, and invasive plant control and habitat restoration.

The field day is designed for any resource manager, contractor, consultant, educator or landowner looking for effective and efficient invasive plant management practices for restoration of woodlands and wildlife, Farlee said.

A registration fee of $30 per person is due by June 12. Lunch will be included. The Wright Center is located seven miles west of campus at 1007 North 725 West. For more information, contact Karen Schneider at 765-494-3583, karenann@purdue.edu
