June 30, 2009 Weed management trials to showcase control methods and resultsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will hold its annual Weed Day on July 7 at the Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) near West Lafayette."Weed Day is an opportunity for anybody in the ag chemical industry, dealers, representatives, farmers and educators to see how some of the products used to control weeds reacted to the cool and wet weather conditions this spring," said Tom Bauman, Purdue Extension weed management specialist and program coordinator. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Beck Agricultural Center with coffee and donuts, and the program begins at 9 a.m. There is no cost to attend, however, preregistration is requested by Friday (July 3) for those who want lunch, which will be served at 11:30 a.m. Call Amy Deitrich at 765-494-9871 or visit http://www.btny.purdue.edu/weedscience/WeedDayRegistration.html to preregister. Participants will tour the corn, soybean and popcorn trials that were planted in late May. Bauman said the corn trials are in and have been sprayed, and the soybeans are a little behind. "Soybean treatments at planting are in and we hope to complete postemergence treatments before July 7," Bauman said. Other trials on the tour include giant ragweed control for Liberty Link, Roundup Ready and non-herbicide resistant corn; volunteer Roundup Ready corn control in Roundup Ready soybeans; appropriateness of soil-applied herbicides in herbicide-resistant programs; and a comparison of new products and new combinations of old products to industry standards and the effect of adjuvants on herbicide performance. "We hope participants will walk away with a comparison of various weed management regimens in corn and soybeans," Bauman said. Continuing certification hours are available for category 1A. Bill Johnson, Purdue Extension weed management specialist, and others from the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology will be available to answer questions and identify any weed samples brought in. For questions and additional information about Weed Day, contact Bauman at 765-494-4625, tbauman@purdue.edu. ACRE is located on U.S. 52 West, seven miles northwest of West Lafayette.
