Appointments, honors and activities

• Faculty and staff honors:

- Li Miao, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism management, is the 2009 recipient of the Arnold I. Cohen Faculty Development Endowment Award. Miao's proposal was selected as the winning submission to conduct research that will examine consumers' pro-environmental behaviors in hospitality settings. The award was established in 2003 in memory of Arnold I. Cohen, the founder of Arni's restaurants, and is sponsored by his family and friends.

- Kyle Pendleton, assistant dean of students, will receive the 2009 Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Fraternity and Sorority Advisors at the association's annual meeting in December. The award was created in 1985 to recognize individuals who have exhibited high professional standards and achievements in fraternity/sorority advising.

- Fabian Winkler, assistant professor of visual and performing arts, received an honorary mention in the Interactive Art category at Ars Electronica 2009 for his latest work. "In the Line of Sight," which is a collaborative work with University of Illinois at Chicago art professor Daniel Sauter, consists of a computer-controlled matrix of 100 flashlights that projects low-resolution video footage. The content of the video footage is a dance performance by Purdue dance professor Rebecca Bryant. The work was exhibited from Sept. 3 to Oct. 4 at Ars Electronica's Cyberarts exhibition in Austria.

- S. Laurel Weldon, an associate professor of political science, has been elected to serve on the Council of the American Political Science Association, the group's governing body. Her work focuses on comparative and international analysis of social policy, particularly as they affect women and other disadvantaged groups. She also is interested in theoretical questions of representation, how to improve policy responsiveness, and the political effects of social movements and institutions.
