Purdue Web site honors student-veterans

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University is profiling five student-veterans on a special Web site being launched Wednesday (Nov. 11) for Veterans Day.

Located at http://www.purdue.edu/fivestudents, the site was created by Purdue Marketing and Media staff to honor the university's tradition of military service and to recognize a new generation of veterans at Purdue. The site features photos of the five students, along with biographical information about their military service and how they came to be at Purdue.

The featured students are:

* Miriam Chacon Boesch, a doctoral student in special education from Dell City, Texas. She began as an Army reservist in 1995 and in February 2007 was deployed to Iraq, where she served as a medic and project purchasing officer. She plans to graduate with her doctorate in May 2011.

* Dylan Meadows, a junior from Martinsville, Ind., majoring in premedicine technology. Meadows, currently president of the Purdue Veterans Student Organization, joined the National Guard when he was 17. He was called to active duty in 2007 and served a combat tour in Iraq. On Sept. 13, 2008, he was injured when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

* Bryan Morris, a junior from Greenwood, S.C., majoring in construction management. Morris, who is treasurer of the Purdue Veterans Student Organization, joined the Marine Corps. He served two combat tours in Iraq as both a fire team leader and an infantry squad leader.

* Stefany Mertins Jones, a senior from Missoula, Mont., majoring in the coordinated program in dietetics. She spent eight years in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman first class. Her husband, Dan, is a commissioned naval officer and reservist.

* Abe Trindle, a freshman from Martinsville, Ind., majoring in history. Trindle enlisted in the Navy in 2001, became a SEAL and served three tours of duty in Iraq. A high school athlete, he joined the Purdue football team as a walk-on safety. After earning his degree, he plans to return to the SEALs as a commissioned officer.
