Kauffman Foundation selects Purdue for $5 million entrepreneurship competition
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue is one of 15 universities selected by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City, Mo., to receive a $50,000 planning award to participate in the foundation's initiative to build entrepreneurism into college curricula and activities.
The Kauffman Foundation will award five to seven challenge grants, each up to $5 million, based on proposals to be presented in December. The foundation, as part of its Kauffman Campuses initiative, will make the awards on the basis of the universities' demonstrated abilities to:
Make entrepreneurism a common and accessible experience for all students.
Infuse entrepreneurship into campus culture.
Adopt a unique, innovative and potentially break-away approach.
Provide support of top university leadership.
Position the university to serve as a model for other colleges and universities.
Richard A. Cosier, Krannert School of Management dean and Leeds Professor of Management, directs Purdue's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship.
"We view our new center as a platform to help launch new technology-based enterprises from Purdue research endeavors," Cosier said. "We want to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of Purdue faculty and students, as well as Indiana businesses, to help them better understand technology transfer and commercialization."
Purdue's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship is one five major centers planned for Purdue's Discovery Park complex. Discovery Park also will include the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the Discovery Learning Center, the Bindley Bioscience Research Center and the e-Enterprises Center for researchers and students in fields including engineering, computer science, life sciences, economics, management and the liberal arts.
