Purdue Homecoming events set for Oct. 3-4

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Mall will be transformed into a tent-filled alumni gathering place for Purdue University's Homecoming celebration, which will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4, before the Boilermakers take on the University of Illinois.

Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Prior to the game, entertainment will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at a stage near the Purdue Bell Tower, after which the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band and Alumni Band will lead a march to the stadium. Schools and organizations, including the Purdue Alumni Association, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, also will present interactive, informational displays. The displays will highlight their programs and serve as meeting places for alumni and Boilermaker fans.

The entertainment will be provided by vocalist and Purdue North Central student Cheri Farris, Purdue Musical Organizations, the Alumni Band, the "All-American" Marching Band and ensembles from the Black Cultural Center. Games and children's activities also will be available.

Lawrence S. Preo, executive director of the Purdue Alumni Association, said Homecoming offers an easy way to keep current with what is happening at Purdue.

"Last year's Homecoming was an event to remember, with more than 10,000 alumni returning to participate in the newly consolidated and expanded festivities," Preo said. "With the Purdue Mall as a focal point, Homecoming offers a comprehensive venue for alumni, families and friends to meet one another and also access up-to-date information on school or organization-related projects and programs. It's one-stop shopping for information – and fun."

Food, provided by the Purdue Memorial Union with assistance from hospitality and tourism management students, will be available in tents along the perimeter of the Purdue Mall prior to the game.

Students will begin their Homecoming festivities with a 7 p.m. parade on Friday, Oct. 3. The Night Train parade will begin at the intersection of Steven C. Beering and Tower drives, proceed up Beering Drive, turn right at First Street, turn right at MacArthur Drive, take another right onto Third Street, turn left at North Intramural Drive and conclude at Stadium Avenue. A pep rally on Slayter Hill will follow at 8 p.m.

The parade and pep rally, sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board, are open to the public. Grandstands for parade spectators will be available at the Recreational Sports Center on North Intramural Drive.

An up-to-date schedule of events, the parade route and tent locations is available online.
