Purdue Theatre students selected for competition

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Student actors and designers from Purdue University Theatre's 2003 spring and fall semester productions were chosen to compete in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. They will join students selected from spring semester shows at the Region III competition at Illinois State University on Jan. 14-18.

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is a national theater education program that identifies and promotes quality in college-level theater production. Last year, more than 1,200 productions involving more than 20,000 students nationwide were entered in the festival.

"I am proud that the talents of our students are being recognized and that they have the opportunity to meet with their peers from collegiate theater programs in our region," said Purdue Theatre chairman Russ Jones. "These students are dedicated to developing their craft, and KCACTF provides an excellent environment in which they can receive outside feedback on their work."

Nominated for the Barbizon Award for Design Excellence are: David Swenson (third-year graduate student, Salt Lake City, Utah), sound designer, "Anton in Show Business"; Michael Dwan (junior theater major, Crown Point, Ind.), lighting designer, "Anton in Show Business" and "Proof"; Jesse Dreikosen (second-year graduate student, Spencer, Wis.), scenic designer, "Anton in Show Business" and "Proof"; Audrey Watson (junior theater major, Tipton, Ind.), costume designer, "Anton in Show Business"; Andrew Ochalek (junior theater major, Romeo, Mich.), sound designer, "Proof"; Katie Miles (junior theater major, Fort Wayne, Ind.), costume designer, "The Cherry Orchard"; Justin Seward (second-year graduate student, Cumberland, Md.), scenic designer, "The Cherry Orchard"; Ben Lawson (senior theater major, Columbus, Ind.) sound designer, "The Cherry Orchard"; Dallas Rainey (second-year graduate student, San Antonio, Texas), lighting designer, "Fuddy Meers" and "The Cherry Orchard"; Megan Heuer (first-year graduate student, Milwaukee, Wis.), scenic designer, "Psycho Beach Party"; Melissa Elischer (senior theater major, Merrillville, Ind.), lighting designer, "Psycho Beach Party"; Rebecca Crow (first-year graduate student, Easton, Kan.), costume designer, "Psycho Beach Party"; and Kindari O’Connor (senior theatre major, West Lafayette), sound designer, "Psycho Beach Party."

Nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition are: Megan Mary Ryan (third-year graduate student, Madison, Wis.), for the role of Miss Maudie Atkins in "To Kill a Mockingbird"; Jeremy Clark (third-year graduate student, Great Falls, Mont.), for the role of Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird"; Christina Mathews (senior theater major, Indianapolis) for the role of T-Anne in "Anton in Show Business"; Erin E. Reitz (third-year graduate student, Lincoln, Neb.) for the role of Ralph/Wikewitch in "Anton in Show Business" and Catherine in "Proof"; David Levine (third-year graduate student, New Haven, Conn.) for the role of Richard in "Fuddy Meers"; James Alan Harris (third-year graduate student, Lincoln, Neb.) for the role of The Limping Man in "Fuddy Meers"; Anita Ross (third-year graduate student, Howe, Ind.) for the role of Claire in "Proof"; Anna Marie Hughes (senior theater major, Carmel, Ind.), for the role of Anya in "The Cherry Orchard"; Carla Harris (third-year graduate student, Longview, Texas), for the role of Varya in "The Cherry Orchard"; Justin Karr (senior theater major, Columbus, Ind.), for the role of Star Cat in "Psycho Beach Party"; Carrie Long (senior theater major, West Lafayette), for the role of Bettina Barnes in "Psycho Beach Party."

Morgan Alsop (junior theater major, Lafayette) was nominated for the Mehron Award for Excellence in makeup for "The Cherry Orchard."
