Farmers to learn about improving profits at marketing sessions

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service offices in Clay, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties will soon offer a series of marketing sessions for farmers to learn more about increasing profits at Ivy Tech at the Hulman Field Airport in Terre Haute.

The sessions will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Thursday from Jan. 12 through March 2.

Speakers and topics include:

• Jan. 12 - Larry Watson, Purdue Extension educator, will discuss the orientation, goals and mission of the series.

• Jan. 19 - Corinne Alexander, Purdue Extension specialist, will speak on marketing plan characteristics.

• Jan. 26 - Phyllis Woodsmall, Rain and Hail Insurance, Terre Haute, will speak on basic marketing options.

• Feb. 2 and 9 - Bob Utterback, Utterback Marketing Services Inc., will focus on how options can be integrated into a hedge program and a technical analysis of the program.

• Feb. 16 - Russ Hanshaw, Archer Daniels Midland manager, will speak about fundamentals analysis, and finding and negotiating private contracts.

• Feb. 23 and Mar. 2 - Chris Hurt, Purdue Extension specialist, will speak about cash grain marketing opportunities at the local elevator, and pre-harvest and post-harvest pricing and guidelines.

Sessions are open to anyone and participants do not need to be from Clay, Sullivan, Vermillion, or Vigo counties in order to enroll. The cost to participate is $20 per first farm operator enrolled and $10 for each additional operator from the same farm. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and class size is limited to 50.

"This is the first time we have done this at the Ivy Tech location," said Lindy Miller, Purdue Extension educator in Vigo County. "We needed more PC resources for our sessions and Ivy Tech had plenty to offer."
