Research interests are in the areas of risk management; farm financial management; financial markets; and land values. Teaches an undergraduate course in agricultural finance and graduate courses in agricultural finance, production economics and risk management.
Is an applied farm management Extension specialist. Research interests include crop and machinery economic issues, as well as farm leasing, personnel management, and accounting. Is an author of the Purdue Model B Linear Program Crop Budget. Has conducted workshops for almost 7,000 Corn Belt farmers to help them determine their best crop mix, machinery size, tillage system and farm size. Worked for the World Bank in Brazil and was the principal consultant to International Harvester in developing a computer-assisted management service for farmers.
Areas of specialty include examination of family farm market problems, pricing strategies and livestock futures market performance. As Extension specialist, provides analysis for participation in government programs, teaches marketing principles and alternatives, evaluates the livestock industry structure, and provides price analysis and outlook for live cattle and live hogs.
Areas of specialty include production economics, risk management, farmer decision-making, farm finance and income tax policy. Recent publications include: "Risk and Grain Marketing Behavior of Large-Scale Farmers," Review of Agricultural Economics (January 1996); and "Whence and Whither in Farm Management Risk Research and Extension Delivery," Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (March 1995). Also coordinates the Purdue Income Tax Schools for tax practitioners and conducts Extension programs in tax, risk and financial management.
Research interests focus on tax law and legal affairs with an emphasis on Indiana and agriculture. Has written or co-written more than 200 articles, papers, and publications. Is publications vice chairman of the Agricultural Law Committee of the General Practice Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) and a recent editor of the ABA's Agricultural Law Newsletter. Interests are income and estate taxation, property law, estate and financial planning, secured transactions (farm product liens), and farm landowner/tenant law. Extension and research activities help keep him current on numerous legal issues.
