Committee working to ensure Web accessibility
The Office of Institutional Equity is pleased to announce that the Purdue University Web Accessibility Committee is assisting with the preparation of an official University policy for making Web sites accessible to people with disabilities.
Summer is traditionally a time for revision and redesign of many of Purdue’s Web sites. Some units simply tweak their content in preparation for the fall semester, but many others undertake major changes in their look and feel, or introduce additional technology to their sites.
Although updating Web sites is generally a step forward, occasionally actions are taken that make Purdue’s sites more difficult for certain users with disabilities to navigate. As a public institution that receives federal funding, Purdue is required to make our pages as accessible as possible.
Until an official University policy on Web accessibility is finalized, the Purdue University Web Accessibility Committee has created some information that will assist users with updating Web sites and making sure they are in compliance with Section 508 guidelines.
Several resources including the Section 508 guidelines and a self-guided training course can be found on Purdue’s Web Accessibility site at www.purdue.edu/webaccessibility. Faculty and staff are encouraged to check the site regularly, as additional information will be added throughout the year.
